The Department

Dance was introduced as a discrete subject in the curriculum at the start of the school's Specialist Performing Arts Status in 2000. The Dance team consists of two dance specialists who have worked hard to establish the subject and in a recent Ofsted inspection the provision in dance at all key stages was judged as excellent. The teachers are committed to making Dance accessible and enjoyable for all students. This commitment extends to a range of extra-curricular opportunities for the students to get involved in. Transcendance Dance Company is run for gifted and talented dance students from Y8 and 9. After school Youth Dance groups are offered to all year groups and run by dance workers from Arts NK. There are regular performance opportunities for the students in the school theatre, at local primary schools and at Arts events like Rock Challenge, the Arts NK Dance Festival and the annual Lincolnshire Arts Festival. Students regularly get the chance to work with and be inspired by professional dance companies. Students in Y12 and 13 can develop their leadership skills through the Dance Leadership Award which involves them leading and teaching younger students, ideal for any students hoping to go into teaching or education work.

The Teaching

Dance is taught in a physical, challenging and enthusiastic way, using a variety of contrasting and engaging teaching strategies. In years 7,8 and 9 Dance is taught in mixed ability classes. All students study Dance at key stage 3 and then can opt to study BTEC, GCSE, AS and A level. An exciting range of topics is covered at key stage 3 from cross-curricular projects like Forces and Dance for Camera and units based on professional works. Students taking BTEC and GCSE Dance at KS4 consistently produce performances and choreography to a standard well above the national average. In the Sixth Form we offer BTEC National and students consistently achieve high grades, with a significant number choosing a career in Dance and continuing to study the subject at degree level.

The Resources

We are lucky to have regular access to the school Theatre for lessons, rehearsals and performances. The students' performance skills and professional approach have been enhanced by the experience of working in such an inspiring environment. It also gives them the opportunity to design their own lighting for public and exam performances. The Theatre also enables students to work with touring dance companies and regularly experience live dance works. We also have a mirrored Dance Studio, which is great for exam groups to develop their dance technique and choreography. The department has a wide range of dance works on video and reference books for the students to access. We encourage students to use ICT resources such as video cameras to record and improve their performance and choreography. They also have access to the school's Recording Studio and Theatre Technician for creating and editing their own accompaniment for their choreography.
