The Department

The Business Department is well established, popular and successful. The team, who are all subject specialists with backgrounds in industry, are welcoming, supportive and hard working. We are keen to make business relevant to all students, and we work together to make sure lessons are interesting and stimulating and based on current real-life resource material. We do everything we can to ensure that all students can reach their full potential. In fact, students on all our advanced level courses consistently achieve above average results. It’s official - Ofsted told us!

The department also runs the Young Enterprise programme during lunchtimes, providing all sixth form students with the opportunity to set up and run a (hopefully!) successful business.

The Teaching

The emphasis in lessons is on a lively pace of learning that challenges students to think through problems for themselves – after all, entrepreneurs don't expect others to give them the answers!

We encourage our students to take an active interest in current affairs and use a variety of sources, including local and national businesses, broadsheets and work placements to develop students' deeper understanding. We support this with trips to conferences and with visiting speakers. Students are also given opportunities to participate in business and economics competitions at both local and national level.

In year 10 students follow the Edexcel GCSE in Business Studies or the Edexcel Applied GCSE in Business Studies.

In the Sixth Form a wide range of courses is offered: AS/A2 Accounting (AQA); AS/A2 Business Studies (AQA); AS/A2 Economics (AQA); BTEC National in Business (Edexcel) and the BTEC First Certificate in Business (Edexcel). As part of the Sixth Form enrichment opportunities we also offer the ifs Certificate and Diploma in Financial Studies. The advanced level courses are open access – it's not a prerequisite to have studied the subjects at Key Stage 4. All Sixth Form subjects are taught jointly with the Business Education team at Sir Robert Pattinson Academy, with whom we have an excellent working relationship.

The Resources

Based in two dedicated, well-equipped rooms, each with 10 networked PCs, OHP, TV and video, the department places much emphasis on the use of current resources such as business and economics magazines, interactive business software, CD ROMs and the Internet for research. We also have an extensive selection of video material to support our teaching.
