September 2015

StudleadblogHello everybody,

We hope you all had a great summer holiday and are excited for this new school year! This year will be full of new projects and challenges for the Student Leadership Team!

Following on from last term, we are very pleased to inform you that our team won the 'Environmental Champion' category at The Lincolnshire Education Awards! This was a huge achievement for the team as we have been working hard on renovating the eco garden for many months and it was lovely that this work was recognised by the judges.

The Grand Opening of the eco garden went really well, with governors, teachers and even the North Hykeham Town Council Mayor and his wife attending! We cannot wait to see the space used more often in the near future. We will be sad to see all the plants disappear as we go into Autumn, the Sunflowers are still sky high and we have had some very long Runner Beans!

Our Charity Day on the last day of the summer term went very well, and from the positive feedback we have received, this is something that we are looking at arranging for 2016.

This term we are looking to recruit new members, especially from years 7 and 8. We meet every Friday lunch in G17 and welcome all new members. Please see Miss Mates in General office, email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. Summer 2015

StudleadblogHello everybody,

The last couple of months have been full of hard work and achievements for the Student Leadership Team at NK. Our school Eco garden has been re-developed and will be undergoing a few final tweaks before our grand opening on Monday 13th July. During this event we will be showcasing our garden to the staff at our school so that they can see how they can use it for their lessons. We are hoping for good weather so that we can kick-start the summer with a tasty barbecue.

The Student Leadership Team took the opportunity to use their work in the garden as the emphasis for this year’s Schools’ Challenge at The Lincolnshire Show. Our entry consisted of a decorative display, portfolio and presentation. The category we entered was ‘My Community, My Commitment’ and we are very proud to announce that we were placed third out of all the secondary schools involved! We are very pleased with this achievement and the work that was put towards it. Our team has also been shortlisted for an award in the Envornmental Champion category at The Lincolnshire Education Awards 2015! We will find out on the 15th July whether we have won!

Over the past few months we have been raising money for a very poorly little girl who will be joining us in the new academic year. Her name is Sophie Robinson and she was recently diagnosed with a brain tumour. She has been very brave in battling the disease and so we wanted to help her in raising money fir her treatment and for research into the condition. So far the Student Leadership Team have raised over £100 from a cake sale. We have organised for a non-uniform fundraising charity day on the last day of this term to help raise even more! We know this money is much appreciated and you can follow her journey on her Facebook page- Sophie’s Cancer Journey.

Thank you very much for reading and, as always, remember you can keep up to date with everything via our Twitter and Facebook page!

Kind regards,

The Student Leadership team.

March 2015

StudleadblogHello everybody!

We would like to update you on our Student Leadership Team news!

The school Eco garden developments are well under way! So far this year the entire plot has been re-landscaped, a new path has been laid, raised beds have been formed out of old tyres and an amphitheatre has been marked out. Additionally, the pond has been cleared out and a fence put around the edge. Grass seed has been sewn and the compost bin has been cleared out and rebuilt using pallets. Everything we have done has been done on a budget provided by the school and with some help from some great businesses. We have been given an extra £500 pounds towards the project by Hykeham town council and The Willows Garden Nursery were extremely generous and gave us lots of seeds, herbs and compost.  We are also currently seeking guidance from Whisby Nature Park!  This space is going to be a great addition to the school and we hope that the area will be well used for lessons during warmer months.  We want to encourage wildlife and the grow a variety of fruits and vegetables which the school restaurant and our Technology department will be able to use.  We also hope to use our research and experience in the Schools’ Challenge at the Lincolnshire Show this year.   If you have any gardening equipment that you no longer use, we would be thrilled with any donations to help with the process.  Thank you everyone!

As a team we have decided to do some fundraising this year.   As you may have seen on our school Facebook page, a very brave young lady called Sophie from Birchwood Primary School is poorly and she and her parents are raising money for much needed medical research into brain tumours.  Sophie will be joining us at NK in September and to celebrate this, and to raise money we are planning a non-uniform day on the 15th July along with lots of other exciting events during the lunch break on that day – watch this space!

In the meantime, we hope you have a wonderful, well-earned Easter break and we hope to see you all back safely in April!

Kind regards,

The Student Leadership Team.

January 2015

StudleadblogHello everyone, and welcome back to the StLT blog! We hope you had a great holiday and have a very happy new year! 2015 is going to have a lot in store for the Student Leadership team! We have a lot of exciting projects coming up including the regeneration of the eco garden and our entry for the Schools' Challenge at the Lincolnshire Show!

Work is starting shortly on re-landscaping the eco garden and the changes will hopefully become more and more noticeable to the students. This project has been long awaited and we are excited to be given the necessary funding to get us started! We hope it will be completed, with us putting the finishing touches to it during the summer months. We feel that this renovated facility will definitely benefit our school environment and the pupils and staff who will have the opportunity to study and relax in the area. The rough plan for the area is attached, which does include the ideas put forward by the StLt so you can have a look at what to expect from us over the next few terms!!

We hope you have a great school term and that you will look forward to seeing the developments we will be making!
