Question Time N.K.

fos-badge-250European Local Democracy week is an Initiative to promote and foster democratic participation at a popular level. 2017 marks the 10 year anniversary of European Local Democracy Week, and the focus this year is on the central motto - "Citizens' participation, consultation and commitment for a living local democracy ".

The overall aim of the annual initiative is to increase people's knowledge of local democracy, their local council and promote the idea of community engagement.

This year at North Kesteven District Council, we are pleased to announce the opportunity to involve young people from the 16-18 age group; a "Question Time" panel style event for 6th form students. Our Questiontime NK event this year has been moved into November to tie in closely with UK Parliament Week, as well as give the schools more time to 'bed in' following the summer holidays.

We are hoping to hold the event on the afternoon of Friday 10th November. The exact time and location are to be confirmed shortly.

There will be a 'Panel of experts'; answering questions from local sixth form students and taking part in discussion and debate. The Panel will consist of a variety of guests such as the District Councillors, local business representatives and other authorities. Students will be asked to submit questions in advance of the event.

The Death of King John

death of king johnDuring the April half term the play 'The Death of King John' which celebrated the 800th anniversary of the King's death at Newark Castle, went to London. The play was directed by Steve Cawte a drama teacher at NK School and featured Mike Gallimore the school's cover manager.

The play had been written by the eminent Professor of Psychiatry Peter Tyrer of Newark and although it started as a small scale community piece of theatre in Newark , rapidly grew in both size of cast and prestige.

Baroness Sheila Hollins quickly joined the cast once the process began. What had started as a small cast of 15 quickly gained local backing and amateur actors swelled its ranks increasing the cast to closer to 50.

Hearing of the play's links to the charity NIDUS-UK the TV Presenter and actor Stephen Fry became involved and ,although he wasn't able to perform live , contributed both his online presence raising awareness about the production as well as providing the voice over for the final scene.

The play first aired on the anniversary of the King's death in October 2016 and was received so well it has been commissioned to perform in London.

Directors Challenge meets InkUbeta

Director's challenge is a competition where year 13 B-tec Drama students write and direct a short 15 minute play. Steve is also involved in a Lincolnshire script development programme called InkUbeta ,where aspiring writers can receive professional feedback from himself and 'Art Isn't Sexys' Nathan T Dean. A selection of the students' work is now going to be developed into full length plays.

Transcendance UDance performance for Tearfund

IMG 3644The North Kesteven School 'Transcendance Girls Dance Company' recently performed their latest work 'Home' at the LPAC theatre as part of the True Motion U.Dance county platform. The piece focused on the plight of refugees in the Middle East. The girls were sponsored to take part in the event with all funds raised going to support Tearfund's 'Middle East Emergency Appeal.'
